Sheffield Wednesday Deals with a 'Significant Problem', States New Football Authority

'We are going to be a part of football's future' - newly appointed regulator David Kogan

Sheffield Wednesday's current difficulties are seen as a "major concern" and the football regulator is seeking powers to examine team situations in comparable cases, its new chair David Kogan has announced.

Through a comprehensive talk, the regulator, who was recently selected, showed understanding towards the club's followers.

The regulator engaged with four supporters' associations connected to the South Yorkshire club this week.

The football club have been struggling on and off the field in this season, with the club delaying salary disbursements on five separate occasions, including in September.

"Clearly Sheffield Wednesday has been a significant problem for EFL and a major challenge for the sport," Kogan told.

"The club represents one of the great brands for football in England and in recent days we have met supporters' organizations.

"We're now looking to get powers... which will permit us to bring Wednesday and comparable cases brought to our attention if they require examination and addressed."

Monetary Issues and Ownership Situation

The club's controversial proprietor Dejphon Chansiri indicated in the summer he would be prepared to relinquish control at the stadium, but he has been unable to finalize an agreement with prospective buyers.

Missed wage deadlines on time in March and May led to sanctions by the football authorities in June, stopping Wednesday from completing any player acquisitions for the next three transfer windows, although those limitations were removed in August.

Authority's Position

Kogan said: "Our role exists to serve the fans of Sheffield Wednesday, Bury or any football club where people are committed to a community organization that has been part of their lives in multiple situations.

"I completely understand Sheffield Wednesday, as I do for all the clubs that since 1992 have gone to the wall, or been close to going to the wall, for causes separate from the fans themselves."

Inquired if the regulator could force an chairman to relinquish a club if they are deemed unsuitable, the chairman responded: "When asking whether 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the reply is once we collect the information and comprehend the circumstances, we will."

But the chairman emphasized that compelling proprietors to divest clubs would be considered the final option and the authority would rather to work with them.

"The final option we would consider is begin intervening in an specific team, an particular chairman, without being in a position to cooperate with that owner to try and resolve the challenges confronting the team and the chairman's encountering," Kogan said.

"In actuality, when you examine the past of the game, over the recent generations there have been certain proprietors, not many, but some who have been irresponsible in the way which they've been managing their teams and eventually decline to assume obligation for the future."

'Errors may undo substantial development'

The chairman convened with officials from numerous teams to detail the scope of the authority recently and maintained it represented a "progressive gathering" with a "high level of engagement" from the grassroots to elite level.

"The role holds considerable importance, because should mistakes occur, if the sport makes errors, the remarkable development accomplished could disappear swiftly," the chairman stated.

"And that's what nobody wants in the realm of domestic football is a huge success story - we must maintain momentum.

"Substantial financial resources entering the sport and has been channeled for the recent generations, because there are no assurances it will continue to come into football, which is among the factors explaining I think we have to maintain a focused outlook on risk and of course, of the next two or three years."

Top Flight Apprehensions

Elite division representatives objected to the establishment of an oversight body because of fears of a negative impact on the top-flight's competitiveness, but the regulator stated: "I'm absolutely committed to the achievement and development as an economic entity of the Premier League.

"Being fully aware of the apprehension regarding damaging the division as a high-quality offering of the nation. But at the same time, if you talk to the Premier League after this week's discussion, they would have had a high level of reassurance -and, in fact, they have been informing us confidentially they have a high level of reassurance."

Ideological Links

The regulator remains subject to a "full inquiry" by the official appointments authority after he revealed he contributed money to the political party in the past.

The chairman provided financial support for government minister Lisa Nandy's leadership campaign, along with that of the current Prime Minister.

"I have fully disclosed my former ideological connection [with Labour], and that ideological connection terminated the day the parliamentary committee confirmed my selection," Kogan said.

"I am presently disconnected from any sort of politics."
