Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments should be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle management.
