At least thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
